Missouri River Fishing Report, August 4, 2026

Summary

While every other river in this week's rotation carries an afternoon closure, the Missouri does not. Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig was explicit about it on August 2: no hoot owl restrictions here, the tailwater's cold releases out of Holter Dam are doing their job even as the rest of the state cooks. Flows are holding in the mid 3,000s (Headhunters read 3,400 cfs on the 2nd; Cross Currents Fly Shop, also in Craig, read 3,900 on the 3rd, a river-wide gauge spread rather than a real jump), and this morning's water temperature sat at 65 degrees, with a recent high near 68 now behind it. The forecast calls for daily highs in the 80s and 90s after a couple of cooler days, so temperature management stays the daily task even without an official closure.

Best techniques

• Get the dry fly game in early: Trico spinners fall around 7:00 a.m. and hold for a couple of hours, then hand off to PMDs and Callibaetis through mid-morning
• Nymph rigs favor a big lead fly (crayfish, worm, or Zirdle) with something small trailing: Zebra Midge, Tailwater Sow, Two Bit Hooker, or a Perdigon all producing
• A dry-dropper covers both games: a Chubby or hopper up top over a Two Bit Hooker or modern Euro nymph below
• Caddis carries the water into the noon hour; fish it blind through riffles with an Ascending Caddis or a downwing dry when nothing is visibly rising
• Streamers are the afternoon's off-label play once the dry bite fades: Kreelex, Sparkle Minnow, Chicago Overcoat, and Thin Mint in black, brown, or olive Bugger variants

Wolf Creek Angler's most recent post ("Late July on the MO," July 24) is unchanged since the last report and is folded in here as background rather than a fresh read: it confirms the same early-fish, watch-the-thermometer picture and adds that WCA voluntarily stops fishing at 68-70 degrees regardless of official restrictions. Montana Fly Goods in Helena posted most recently on July 22 (also unchanged), background as well; it's the only shop tracking the below-Hauser-Dam stretch, where leeches and crayfish patterns were producing alongside the same Holter-side patterns, and the Helena-area lakes bite (balanced leeches, chironomids, scuds, damsels). Montana Trout Hunters again carried no dated conditions report this run, evergreen guide content only, the standing coverage gap.

Hatches

Tricos carry the month, with strong late-July hatches that arrived early and show no sign of slowing into September. PMDs remain a factor, Callibaetis are showing in decent numbers, and caddis fill the midday gap. Terrestrials (ants and hoppers especially) are the August constant; spruce moths are a possibility worth carrying blind.

Outlook. Expect the mid 3,000s flows and mid 60s water temperatures to hold if the weather cooperates; Headhunters expects little further drop through the month. Boat and wade traffic remains heavy river-wide, and the first anglers on the water get the Trico fall to themselves. Weeds are running a manageable 3 out of 10 today, worse the farther downriver you go, lightest behind Holter Dam.
