Regional summary
August has settled over the four rivers with the particular hush of low water. Gauges are down across the board, hoot owl restrictions (no fishing from 2:00 p.m. to midnight) now cover every named stretch from the Blackfoot to Upper Rock Creek, and fish are holding wherever they can find oxygen. The pattern repeats on all four rivers this week: fish early, carry a thermometer, and treat the 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. window (the read from Lightweight Fly Shop in Stevensville) as the day's real opportunity.

Float hazard: numerous trees are down again this season, and Grizzly Hackle flags a few stretches as genuinely dangerous. Call the shop for current locations before floating unfamiliar water.
The Bitterroot draws the short straw this week. Grizzly Hackle's quality rating puts it at 2 out of 5, behind all three of its neighbors, as the mainstem settles into a low, slow, technical stretch. Flows run from 445 cfs near Darby down to 238 at Bell Crossing before picking back up to 631 near Missoula, and the midday water temperature sits at 72 degrees. The whole mainstem, from the East and West fork confluence to the Clark Fork, carries hoot owl restrictions, and this week added two more reaches: the East Fork above Star Falls and the West Fork below Painted Rock Dam, both new to the restricted list as of August 1. Freestone Fly Shop's most recent full report (July 24) still described the forks as open water; that changed inside the last two weeks, a reminder of how fast the hoot owl map moves in August.
Best techniques
- Dry dropper still finds fish early: a Chubby Chernobyl, Water Walker, or Dancin' Ricky up top with a TJ Hooker, Frenchie, or Pheasant Tail Nymph trailing beneath
- Once the sun gets up, the game turns technical: longer leaders, 5X to 6X tippet, and a soft presentation to grassy banks and tailouts where fish are sipping spinners
Hatches
Golden stones are still around in fair numbers, unusual for early August, alongside PMDs, caddis, and building Trico activity in the mornings. Hoppers, ants, and beetles are taking over the afternoon slot.

Outlook. The lower rating this week is worth taking as a signal rather than a warning off. The fish are still there; they just want the early window and a careful approach. Freestone Fly Shop in Hamilton is the closest read on the valley's forks and worth a call before committing to a stretch that just changed status.
