Rock Creek Fishing Report: May 3, 2026
The Missoula-area rivers are easing into late spring. Flows have been dropping and clearing this week thanks to a stretch of cooler weather, and the dry-fly window keeps widening — March Browns, BWOs, and Gray Drakes are the headliners, with Skwalas still in the mix on the Bitterroot River and Rock Creek and the first Mother's Day Caddis starting to pop on the lower Clark Fork River. Subsurface still pays the bills, but a real dry-fly bite is showing up midday and into the evening — especially on the Bitterroot River, which is the standout river right now. Watch the gauges early next week: forecast highs into the low 70s could push another snowmelt bump before Wednesday's cold front swings temperatures and precipitation back through the system.
Water: Slightly elevated, ~1,000–1,200 cfs near Clinton · Visibility: 2–3 ft (slightly off-color) · Temp: 41–43°F
Rock Creek is in classic late-April form — cold, moderately elevated, and fishable but technical. Recent cold weather has dropped flows and improved clarity. Pressure has noticeably increased on the accessible stretches, but the fish are still cooperating. Nymphing and streamers are the most consistent, with dry-fly windows during warmer afternoons.
Hatches: Skwalas, BWOs, March Browns, Gray Drakes, Midges, Caddis, plus Nemoura and Capnia.
Best techniques:
- Heavy indicator rig with a stonefly nymph trailing a perdigon, mayfly, or worm — fished deep through pocket water, deeper runs, and softer holding water. Look for fish in side channels, too, where they escape higher main-stem flows.
- Dry-dropper with a Skwala foam dry over a PT, TJ, San Juan, or Duracell is the go-to rig.
- Single dries — Water Walker or Plan B for blind fishing the Skwala; Ms. Tickle cripple, D&D Cripple, Carnage Drake, Brindlechutes, or a big Purple Haze when fish rise to March Browns.
- Streamers tight to banks, undercuts, and through deeper pockets — baby trout and sculpin are scattered everywhere right now.
Featured flies:
- Dries: Hi-Vis Skinny Chubby – Skwala, Oswald's Rastaman, Emma Stone, Fool's Gold, Water Walker, Plan B, Galloup's Goober Midge, Griffith's Gnat, Brindlechute, Purple Haze, Adams, D&D Cripple, Ms. Tickle, Carnage Drake.
- Nymphs: Solitude TJ Hooker, Double Bead Stones, Front St. Stones, Rubberlegs, Blow Torches, Tungsten Jig Pheasant Tail, Jig PTs, Jig BH Prince, MFC Jig Perdigon Fire Starter, Jig Batman, San Juans.
- Streamers: Coffey's Conehead Sparkle Minnow, Kreelex, Lil' Kim, Rio Thin Mint Bugger, Galloup's Mini Peanut Envy, MFC Chicago Overcoat, Bighorn Buggers, Mini Dungeons, Micro-Dungeons, Woolly-Headed Sculpins, Woolly Buggers, Jig Zirdles.
Outlook: Decent weekend with highs into the 60s by Monday and Tuesday. Rising overnight lows could drive more snowmelt, then Wednesday's cool-down with snow showers ends the warm window. Take advantage of current conditions before the warm-up.
