6/12/2026: Clark Fork River Fishing Report

Summary

Prime time has arrived. All four rivers are dropping and clearing post-runoff, and the salmonfly hatch is the headline across the region, with golden stones building right behind it. Rock Creek is the standout (both Grizzly Hackle and the Missoulian Angler rate it 5/5), the Blackfoot is entering its famous window, the Bitterroot is in great shape, and the Clark Fork has turned the corner and is fishing well as clarity improves. Best regional window this week runs roughly 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Lightweight). Float anglers: log jams and fresh down trees are a real hazard on the Bitterroot and Rock Creek as flows drop fast, so stay alert.

At a glance: Dropping and slightly off color, mid-day water temp around 56°F | GH 1/5 | Missoulian Angler 4/5 | Best window 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Dropping and slightly off color, mid-day water temp around 56°F. Roughly 7,370 CFS above Missoula and 13,900 below. The upper end has cleared up nicely. The Clark Fork is the last river in the area to clean up post-runoff, but it has turned the corner and the fishing has been good the last few days. The most recent Missoulian Angler report (4/5) is notably more upbeat than Grizzly Hackle's June 4 note (1/5).

Best techniques

With clarity still slightly off, a nymph rig is the best bet: massive stonefly patterns, bright red or pink worms, and heavy Zirdle Bugs. For the goldens showing on the lower river, fish a Golden Plan B, Golden Juicy Stone, or Henry's Fork Goldenstone. Dry fly fishing has been solid in the afternoons, and streamer fishing is really good as the river drops. Target soft edges, side channels, and seams adjacent to the main current. The upper river fishes better than the lower right now.

Hatches

Salmonflies and Golden Stones are the primary insects, with the goldens starting to pop on the lower river. PMDs, Green Drakes, caddis, and yellow sallies are filling in, especially in town.
