Blackfoot River Fishing Report: June 12, 2026

Regional summary

Prime time has arrived. All four rivers are dropping and clearing post-runoff, and the salmonfly hatch is the headline across the region, with golden stones building right behind it. Rock Creek is the standout (both Grizzly Hackle and the Missoulian Angler rate it 5/5), the Blackfoot is entering its famous window, the Bitterroot is in great shape, and the Clark Fork has turned the corner and is fishing well as clarity improves. Best regional window this week runs roughly 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Lightweight). Float anglers: log jams and fresh down trees are a real hazard on the Bitterroot and Rock Creek as flows drop fast, so stay alert.

At a glance: Dropping and slightly off color | Clarity improving daily | Water temp around 54°F at midday | ~5,000 CFS at Bonner | GH rating: 3/5 | Best window: 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Dropping and slightly off color, mid-day water temp around 54°F, running near 5,000 CFS at Bonner. Entering prime time. Clarity improves daily, and fish are looking up for the big bugs.

Best techniques

A dry-dropper rig is the workhorse: a Henry's Fork Foam Stone, a dark Chubby Chernobyl, or a Juicy Stone up top with a Sili-Leg Stone, TJ Hooker, San Juan Worm, or Prince Nymph underneath. Focus tight to banks, willow lines, and eddies, and fish the softer water adjacent to heavy current. Streamers are highly effective for covering water as the river drops.

Hatches and flies. Salmonflies are the main event, concentrated on the lower half and pushing upstream over the coming days. Golden Stones and Green Drakes are starting, with PMDs and caddis filling in. Dries: Chubby Chernobyl, Henry's Fork Foam Stone, Juicy Stone, Water Walker, Elk Hair Caddis, Furminksy's Fluttering Foam Caddis, Carlson's Purple Haze. Nymphs: Pat's Rubber Legs, TJ Hooker, Sili-Leg Stone, San Juan Worm, Prince Nymph, Frenchie, Psycho May, Split Case PMD, Double Bead Stone, Jiggler, Wire Worm, Chicago Overcoat, Hare's Ear Nymph, perdigons. Streamers: Sparkle Minnow, Mini Dungeons, Swim Coach, Peanut Envy, Kreelex, Woolly Bugger.

Outlook. Weekend temps in the 60s and 70s near Ovando, high 70s next week with a mix of sun and clouds. The hatch pushes upstream and dry-dropper fishing should stay excellent for the next couple of weeks.
