6/12/2026: Bitterroot River Fishing Report

Summary

Prime time has arrived. All four rivers are dropping and clearing post-runoff, and the salmonfly hatch is the headline across the region, with golden stones building right behind it. Rock Creek is the standout (both Grizzly Hackle and the Missoulian Angler rate it 5/5), the Blackfoot is entering its famous window, the Bitterroot is in great shape, and the Clark Fork has turned the corner and is fishing well as clarity improves. Best regional window this week runs roughly 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Lightweight). Float anglers: log jams and fresh down trees are a real hazard on the Bitterroot and Rock Creek as flows drop fast, so stay alert.

At a glance: Dropped into great shape, good clarity, mid-day water temp around 56°F | GH 3/5 | Missoulian Angler 4/5 | Best window 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Dropped into great shape, good clarity, mid-day water temp around 56°F. Roughly 6,690 CFS near Missoula, dropping to about 2,180 near Darby. The upper river and forks are fishing especially well.

Note. Log jams and fresh down trees are a major hazard, and the danger increases as the water drops fast. Floaters need to stay alert and float cautiously.

Best techniques

Dry-dropper rigs are excellent: a big golden stone or Chubby Chernobyl up top with a stonefly nymph, San Juan Worm, or Frenchie dropped underneath. Nymphing remains the most consistent method through the day. Fish soft inside-bends and pools, and leave the fast water for the floaters. Streamer fishing is great right now, and you can get away with a big streamer this time of year.

Hatches

Salmonflies are slowing on the upper river but Golden Stones are now showing river-wide. PMDs, Yellow Sallies, caddis, Green Drakes, and BWOs are all building, best on cloudy afternoons.
