6/12/2026: Rock Creek Fishing Report

Summary

Prime time has arrived. All four rivers are dropping and clearing post-runoff, and the salmonfly hatch is the headline across the region, with golden stones building right behind it. Rock Creek is the standout (both Grizzly Hackle and the Missoulian Angler rate it 5/5), the Blackfoot is entering its famous window, the Bitterroot is in great shape, and the Clark Fork has turned the corner and is fishing well as clarity improves. Best regional window this week runs roughly 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Lightweight). Float anglers: log jams and fresh down trees are a real hazard on the Bitterroot and Rock Creek as flows drop fast, so stay alert.

At a glance: Dropping into beautiful, stable shape, mid-day water temp in the low-to-mid 50s, around 1,320 CFS near Clinton | GH 5/5 | Missoulian Angler 5/5 | Best window 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Dropping into beautiful, stable shape, mid-day water temp in the low-to-mid 50s, around 1,320 CFS near Clinton. Some of the best fishing of the year is on tap. Still runoff season, so wade carefully.

Note. Floating diversions: a tree is down near Mile Marker 27, a new one sits between Upper Fire Ring and the Microburst, and the Lower Fire Ring to Elkhorn corner is blocked by a fresh log. Float cautiously.

Best techniques

A dry-dropper with a Juicy Stone, Henry's Fork Foam Stone, or Chubby Chernobyl on top and a TJ Hooker, Sili-Leg Stone, or Prince Nymph underneath has been the ticket. When fish commit to the dry, cut the dropper and fish a single salmonfly or golden stone pattern. Focus on log jams, soft pocket water, and deeper banks. For the salmonfly bite, head upstream; the lower creek below Norton's has fished slower with the big bug.

Hatches

Salmonflies are going strong from the middle into the upper creek, and Golden Stones are in full swing on the lower and middle stretches. Green Drakes (best on cloudy afternoons), Yellow Sallies, PMDs, and caddis are all coming on.

Outlook. Temps in the 60s and 70s, lots of sunshine into next week, perfect for dry fly fishing. The salmonfly hatch keeps pushing upstream while goldens, green drakes, and sallies stack up behind it. This is the window.
