Rock Creek Fishing Report, July 3, 2026

2026-07-03 (July 3, 2026)

Regional summary

Western Montana comes into the July 4th weekend on the back side of a cool, wet stretch. This week's rain bumped every river in the region (hardest on Rock Creek, gentlest on the Blackfoot), pushed the Clark Fork above its historical median, and softened clarity in spots, but everything remains fishable and the water is settling daily. Golden Stones are the headline bug on all four rivers now, with salmonflies reduced to stragglers on the upper Blackfoot canyon and high drainage water. PMDs, Green Drakes, Yellow Sallies, and caddis round out the "bug soup," and dry-dropper remains the dominant method everywhere. The forecast flips warm: a chance of afternoon thunderstorms Friday, then mostly sunny holiday weather Saturday and Sunday. The two things to plan around are post-rain clarity (check gauges before committing) and holiday crowds (fish early, expect busy accesses, and have a backup stretch in mind). One rule change to note: Rock Creek converted to wade fishing only on July 1.

At a glance: Wade fishing only as of July 1 | came up hard with the rain, bigger and pushier | variable clarity | low 50s mornings | ~785 CFS near Clinton (6/28 reading) | GH rating: 4/5 | Best window: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Float and wade hazards. A tree is down at Mile Marker 27, and a new diversion sits between Upper Fire Ring and the Microburst. With the creek pushy after the rain, watch for fast pocket water, slick rocks, and tight banks. Wade carefully.

Wade fishing only: Rock Creek's annual float-fishing restriction took effect July 1, so it is a wade fishery until late fall. Rock Creek came up hard with the rain and is running much bigger than the skinny late-June stretch. It is still fishable, but wading is tougher in fast pocket water and clarity may vary until it settles; the added water is keeping fish comfortable and spread out. Salmonflies are done and Golden Stones are past peak but still the main big dry, with the focus shifting toward PMDs, Green Drakes, Yellow Sallies, and caddis. Target soft banks, boulder edges, riffle drops, inside bends, pocket water, and slower seams behind heavier current.

Best techniques

Hatches

Salmonflies finished, Golden Stones past peak but still the main big dry, strong Green Drakes on cloudy days, PMDs with evening spinner falls, Yellow Sallies, and thick caddis at dusk.

Outlook. Warm near Clinton with a thundershower chance Friday, mostly sunny weather for the holiday weekend, and another spotty storm chance early next week. If Rock Creek drops back and clarity improves, fishing should rebound quickly. Holiday crowds: expect plenty of anglers, campers, and general recreation traffic along Rock Creek Road; use established parking and have a backup spot ready.
