Bitterroot River Fishing Report, July 3, 2026

2026-07-03 (July 3, 2026)

Regional summary

Western Montana comes into the July 4th weekend on the back side of a cool, wet stretch. This week's rain bumped every river in the region (hardest on Rock Creek, gentlest on the Blackfoot), pushed the Clark Fork above its historical median, and softened clarity in spots, but everything remains fishable and the water is settling daily. Golden Stones are the headline bug on all four rivers now, with salmonflies reduced to stragglers on the upper Blackfoot canyon and high drainage water. PMDs, Green Drakes, Yellow Sallies, and caddis round out the "bug soup," and dry-dropper remains the dominant method everywhere. The forecast flips warm: a chance of afternoon thunderstorms Friday, then mostly sunny holiday weather Saturday and Sunday. The two things to plan around are post-rain clarity (check gauges before committing) and holiday crowds (fish early, expect busy accesses, and have a backup stretch in mind). One rule change to note: Rock Creek converted to wade fishing only on July 1.

At a glance: Excellent early-summer form; lower river settling after the biggest bump | very good clarity, variable by section | upper 40s (Darby) to mid 50s (Missoula) mornings | ~1,250 CFS Darby / ~2,740 Bell Crossing / ~3,760 near Missoula (6/28 readings) | GH rating: 4.5/5 | Best window: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Float hazard: log jams and debris remain a major hazard. Lots of trees are down again this year and a few places are dangerous. Floaters must stay alert and float cautiously; call a Bitterroot Valley shop for current down-tree information before launching.

The Bitterroot is settling into excellent early-summer fishing. It came up with the rain, especially on the lower river near Missoula, which may need a little time to settle; the upper and middle river are the most consistent water right now, and the upper river has been fishing especially well. Clarity is very good overall. Trout are spreading through classic summer holding water: riffle edges, tailouts, foam lines, side channels, grassy banks, and slower seams next to heavier current. The overlapping hatches have the fish looking up all day: Golden Stones (the local "Bitterroot stones") are the primary attraction, with PMDs, Yellow Sallies, caddis, Green Drakes, and a few lingering salmonflies up high. In the afternoon heat, don't overlook terrestrials tight to grassy banks.

Hatches

Consistent Golden Stones, PMDs, Yellow Sallies, Green Drakes, and caddis, plus lingering salmonflies high in the system. "Bug soup" continues; dry-fly fishing has been consistent throughout the day, and terrestrials are starting to matter along the banks.

Outlook. Warm days around Hamilton with a thundershower chance Friday and mostly sunny weather for the July 4th weekend. The Bitterroot should continue to fish exceptionally well over the coming week and remains the best overall option in the region. Holiday crowds: heavy floater and bank pressure expected; fish early, give other river users space, and have a backup stretch in mind.
