Rock Creek Fishing Report: April 30, 2026

Spring is settling in on the four Missoula-area rivers. Flows have come off the early-week peak and are starting to drop and clear, but every river is still running high. The dry-fly window is opening up — Skwalas, March Browns, BWOs, and a few Gray Drakes are showing — though nymphs and streamers remain the most reliable producers. The Bitterroot River is the standout right now, with the cleanest water and the most consistent dry-fly action.

Water: Slightly elevated, ~1,100–1,200 cfs near Clinton · Visibility: 2–3 ft (slightly off-color) · Temp: 41–43°F

Rock Creek is in classic late-April form — cold, moderately elevated, and fishable but technical. Clarity dipped slightly from earlier in the week, and pressure has noticeably increased on the accessible stretches, but the fish are still cooperating. Nymphing and streamers are the most consistent, with occasional dry-fly windows during the warmer afternoons.

Hatches: Skwalas, BWOs, March Browns, Gray Drakes, Midges, Caddis, plus Nemoura and Capnia.

Best techniques:

  • Heavy indicator rig with a stonefly nymph trailing a perdigon, mayfly, or worm — fished deep through pocket water, deeper runs, and softer holding water.
  • Dry-dropper with a Skwala foam dry over a PT, TJ, San Juan, or Duracell when the bite gets better.
  • Single dries — Water Walker or Plan B for blind fishing the Skwala; Ms. Tickle cripple, D&D Cripple, or a big Purple Haze when fish rise to March Browns.
  • Streamers tight to banks, undercuts, and through deeper pockets — Bighorn Buggers, Sparkle Minnows, Mini Dungeons, Woolly Buggers, Woolly-Headed Sculpins, Jig Zirdles.

Featured flies:

Outlook: Decent weekend with highs into the 60s by Monday and Tuesday. Rising overnight lows could drive more snowmelt, then Wednesday's cool-down with snow showers ends the warm window. Take advantage of current conditions before the warm-up.
