Bitterroot River Fishing Report, May 31, 2026
Runoff is back across the region after another warm push. The Bitterroot is the most fishable mainstem; Salmonflies have arrived on lower Rock Creek but high, off-color water is throttling the dry-fly bite everywhere. Nymph heavy, fish the soft edges, and treat dries as opportunistic until flows drop.

Log jams and debris remain a real hazard — especially the obstruction near Poker Joe. Float cautiously and watch for new wood as runoff reshapes channels daily.
The Bitterroot is the best regional play. Flows are dropping in spots but the system took another bump and the lower river is still pushy. The upper river near Darby has fished best. Salmonflies are starting to show on the upper river — have the big bugs ready. BWOs, PMDs, caddis, and March Browns are the dry windows when wind and clouds cooperate.
Best techniques
- Nymphing or dry-dropper with big-profile stoneflies and worms; heavy enough to get down fast
- Fish softer water aggressively — side channels, soft banks, inside bends, tailouts
- Streamers tight to banks and around structure; articulated and dark
- Opportunistic dries on risers in protected seams
