Rock Creek Fishing Report, May 31, 2026
Runoff is back across the region after another warm push. The Bitterroot is the most fishable mainstem; Salmonflies have arrived on lower Rock Creek but high, off-color water is throttling the dry-fly bite everywhere. Nymph heavy, fish the soft edges, and treat dries as opportunistic until flows drop.
Conditions: High and off-color · Near Clinton ~2,020 CFS · 47–55°F · Grizzly Hackle: 4/5 · Best window: 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Float hazards — tree down at Mile Marker 27, and a new one between Upper Fire Ring and Microburst. Wade carefully; the creek is technical at these flows.
Salmonflies are here on the lower 10 miles and fish are looking up for them. The hatch is the headline; flows are still high and clarity is poor with the warm weather and recent rain, but the bugs are moving. Side channels, structure, and slower water hold the fish. The hatch will likely build upstream by the end of the week.

- Dry-dropper a foamy Salmonfly over a big stonefly nymph
- Nymph deep with TJ Hooker, Sili-Leg Stone (Orange TB), Pat's Rubber Legs (Tungsten), Hot-Bead Double Bead Stone, Zirdle
- Stream side channels, willow lines, and big-rock/tree softs for surface eats
- Streamers in softer bank water — sculpins and buggers — slow tight to structure

Outlook: Cold and wet weekend with highs in the 40s and rain Saturday and Sunday — the cold could slow the hatch briefly. Highs creep back into the 60s by Tuesday; the salmonfly party should rip upstream as the warmth returns.
