Regional summary

The holiday-weekend rain arrived as one storm, but four rivers are answering it in four different tempers: some clearing fast, some carrying the push longer, each true to its own character. All four took the same bump and are now, days out, on the same general trajectory, dropping and clearing at their own pace. The extra water is a gift for the date. It keeps trout comfortable, resettles them through classic summer holding water, and buys the region a few days before the real heat lands. That heat is close. An unsettled Monday gives way to highs in the upper 80s midweek and the mid-90s by Friday, and the best fishing window shortens with every one of those degrees: 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. now per Lightweight Fly Shop in Stevensville, sunrise to noon by Friday. The bug board reads like peak summer: Golden Stones anchor every river, PMDs, Green Drakes, Yellow Sallies, and caddis fill the rest of the menu, and the first ants and nocturnal stones are starting to matter. Salmonflies have finished. No hoot-owl restrictions were in effect as the shops filed their reports, but a mid-90s Friday is reason enough to check Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks before any trip this week.

Float hazard: floaters beware: log jams and downed trees remain a serious hazard. and the fast-dropping water makes them more dangerous, not less. A few places are genuinely bad this year. Stay alert, scout what you cannot see around, and call a valley shop for current down-tree information before launching.

The Bitterroot is the third temper: the sibling that shrugged the storm off entirely. It took a solid push, especially down low near Missoula, and absorbed it without much fluctuation up high, good clarity, and a fast, steady drop. The upper and middle river are the cleanest, most predictable water, and the whole system is in a genuine multi-bug phase, with PMDs, Green Drakes, Golden Stones (the valley's "Bitterroot stones"), Yellow Sallies, and caddis overlapping through the day. Fish are looking up and spreading into riffle edges, grassy banks, willow lines, side channels, foam lines, and tailouts. Wade anglers should note the water is still on the strong side; pick crossings carefully.

Best techniques

• The workhorse rig is a dry-dropper: Chubby Chernobyl, Water Walker, Dancin Ricky, or Fools Gold in #10-14 up top, with a hot-spot Perdigon, PMD nymph, or Frenchie 18 to 24 inches below. Subsurface, the Grizzly Hackle bench likes a Pat's, TJ Hooker, AB Sally, Phase 2, Jig PT, or Jig Thrasher.
• As the afternoon hatch thickens, go to the single dry: PMD Sparkle Duns, Purple Haze, Parachute Adams, hot-spot Brindles, and Purple Para Roosters for the mayfly eaters; Stimulators, Sweet Dreams, and Plan Bs for the smaller stones; X-Caddis and Elk Hair Caddis when the caddis get going late. Terrestrials tight to grassy banks are already turning fish in the afternoon heat.
• Streamers buy the bigger fish early and between hatches: white, yellow, olive, or black, with the Sparkle Minnow, Sir-Sticks-A-Lot, the new Good Idea, Thin Mint, and Mini Dungeon all catching.

Hatches

Full summer spread: Golden Stones consistent, PMDs and Green Drakes strong in the afternoons (the drakes love a cloudy day), Yellow Sallies along banks and riffle edges, caddis late, and the first ants and beetles filling gaps between hatches. This is the hatch variety the valley shops wait all year to talk about; a stop on the way south is worth the two minutes.

Outlook. A storm chance today around Hamilton, then warm and sunny through the week with Friday pushing toward the mid-90s. The Root should keep fishing exceptionally as it drops; just move the day earlier as the heat builds, and keep an eye on afternoon water temperatures by Friday.
