Bitterroot River Fishing Report: April 30, 2026

Spring is settling in on the four Missoula-area rivers. Flows have come off the early-week peak and are starting to drop and clear, but every river is still running high. The dry-fly window is opening up — Skwalas, March Browns, BWOs, and a few Gray Drakes are showing — though nymphs and streamers remain the most reliable producers. The Bitterroot River is the standout right now, with the cleanest water and the most consistent dry-fly action.

Floaters beware. Log jams and downed trees from early runoff are major hazards. A specific obstruction near Poker Joe is noted by Kingfisher; Grizzly Hackle reports several dangerous places throughout the system. Float cautiously and call ahead for current navigation info.

Water: High but clearing, ~4,300–4,400 cfs near Missoula, 1,700 at Darby · Visibility: 3–4 ft · Temp: 46–50°F

The Bitterroot is the standout right now. It's running noticeably clearer than the Clark Fork or Blackfoot, and the dry-fly action has been the most consistent in the area — particularly in the evening windows when the March Brown hatch peaks. The river is still high, so wading is limited; floaters working softer edges, side channels, and inside seams are finding solid opportunities.

Hatches: Skwalas (still strong), March Browns (peak), BWOs, Gray Drakes, early Mother's Day Caddis, midges.

Best techniques:

  • Dry-dropper is the most reliable rig — but the best fish are in tight to woody structure where nymphs don't go.
  • Start the day subsurface (cold mornings keep bugs and fish quiet). Switch to dries by midday and through the evening.
  • Streamers continue to move big fish, especially as flows fluctuate.

Featured flies:

Outlook: Highs climbing steadily through the weekend into the low 70s by Tuesday under sunny skies. A sharp drop on Wednesday brings rain, snow, and 50s. The dry-fly window may tighten if early-week heat triggers another flow bump.
