6/15/2026: Rock Creek Fishing Report

Summary

Early summer has arrived and all four rivers keep dropping into shape. The story across the region is a hand-off: the salmonfly hatch is winding down and pushing into the upper drainages, while golden stones take over as the headline big bug river-wide. Green Drakes, PMDs, yellow sallies, and caddis are all filling in, so this is prime dry-dropper season. The Blackfoot and Rock Creek are the standouts (Grizzly Hackle rates both 5/5), the Bitterroot offers the best all-around odds, and the Clark Fork has turned the corner and is fishing well as clarity improves. Best regional window this week runs roughly 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (Lightweight), and warm afternoons mean watching water temps and starting earlier when needed. Float anglers: fresh down trees and log jams are a real hazard on the Bitterroot and Rock Creek as flows drop fast, and Rock Creek is getting skinny for floating.

At a glance: Dropping into beautiful, stable shape with good clarity, mid-day water temp around 55°F, running near 927 CFS at Clinton | GH 5/5 | Missoulian Angler 5/5 | Best window 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Dropping into beautiful, stable shape with good clarity, mid-day water temp around 55°F, running near 927 CFS at Clinton. Wading is becoming more realistic, but the creek still has push in the main channel and is getting bony for floating in spots. Focus on softer holding water along banks, inside bends, pocket water, and slower seams.

Note. Floaters: a few diversions and fresh down trees are present. Between Lower Fire Ring and Elkhorn it is woody and jammy, with a corner blocked by a fresh log. Float cautiously and be mindful of sweepers.

Best techniques

Dry-dropper fishing has been the most consistent: a Chubby Chernobyl, Clark Fork Stone, Dancin' Ricky, or Fool's Gold in #8-12 up top, with a Pat's Rubber Legs, Explosion Stone, TJ Hooker, Jig PT, Hare's Ear, Shuck It, Duracell, or big Prince Nymph underneath. For the epic Green Drake hatches, fish a Hatchback Drake, Flash Cripple, or Carnage Drake. If fish start eating the dry, cut off the dropper and fish a single golden stone or salmonfly dry. Stripping or swinging a Sparkle Minnow, Bighorn Bugger, or Rusty Trombone also works well.

Hatches

The Salmonfly hatch is about wrapped up and now relegated to the upper creek, with Golden Stones the main event throughout. Green Drakes, Yellow Sallies, PMDs, and evening caddis round out the menu. Cloudy afternoons bring the best Green Drake and PMD activity.

The Fly Box

Nymphs: Pat's Rubber Legs, TJ Hooker, Sili-Leg Stone, Prince Nymphs, Explosion Stone, Jig PTs, Hare's Ears, Shuck-its, Duracells, Frenchies, Split Case PMD

Outlook. Temps in the 60s and 70s, perfect for dry fly fishing, continuing into the 70s with lots of sunshine next week. Flows keep dropping. Get out soon if you hope to float; otherwise stand by for excellent wade-fishing conditions as the creek settles into a summer pattern. This is some of the best fishing of the year on Rock Creek.
