Madison River Fishing Report, July 7, 2026

Summary
The Madison has struck its big-bug set and moved to steadier scenery. The salmonfly hatch that was pushing up through the wade section a week ago has largely finished its run, and the river left behind is the good, workmanlike kind: caddis as the headline hatch, PMDs and Yellow Sallies all day, and even a few Green Drakes bringing fish up. Hebgen Lake refilled during the cool stretch, so the Upper is running on consistent, healthy flows, up to 1,080 cfs at Kirby today from 942 at the end of June.
Upper Madison
The Upper is in the sweet spot the season promises and rarely delivers on schedule. The rain settled in without doing damage, flows came up to a healthy summer level as Hebgen releases continued, and the river is fishing as consistently as anything in the region. Caddis are the primary hatch, with PMDs and Yellow Sallies showing throughout the day and a few Green Drakes mixed in. The salmonflies that reached Three Dollar Bridge in the first days of July are mostly gone from the stage; a determined angler can still hunt the tail end in the water above Raynolds, but the smarter play is the summer program now playing everywhere else. Golden Stones remain a trout favorite, fished in green and gold, sized down when fish refuse the big bug.
Fish are spread throughout the river, so covering water beats camping on a run. They hold the banks early, then slide into riffles and faster water as the day warms. Slide Inn's late-June observation still applies: the middle and lower sections hold pickier fish, so keep changing bugs until something sticks.
Best techniques (Upper):
- Dry-dropper (the workhorse): a purple or royal Chubby Chernobyl (the Pteronarcys Chubby earns its keep), Waterwalker, Fluttering Stone, Henry's Fork Salmonfly, or Fools Gold Salmonfly up top with a Spanish Bullet, PMD-style perdigon, or Pat's Rubber Legs a couple feet below.
- Nymphing (cooler mornings): Pat's Rubber Legs #4-8 in black and coffee with a smaller attractor behind it: Jig Prince, Jig Frenchie, BH Pheasant Tail, lightning bugs, Green Machine PT, Three Dollar Dip, Olsen's Hare's Ear Blowtorch, Purple Blowtorch, worm patterns, or a caddis-stage nymph.
- Emergers, when bugs start popping: Zylon Emerger and RIO's Edible Emerger for caddis, Elden's CDC PMD Emerger for PMDs. In the film ahead of the hatch these outfish the dun.
- Dries for risers: X Caddis tan #14-16, Comparadun PMD #16, Elk Hair Caddis, Finfetcher Caddis, Oikawa's Caddis, Missing Link Caddis, Cornfed Caddis, Sparkle Dun, and Purple Haze, with a Summer Stone Yellow #14 as the small-stone attractor on top.
- Streamers (first and last light): olive and white have been the colors. Two-tone bugs like Galloup's Laser Legal, the Mini Boogieman, Mini Dolly Llama, and a white and gold Goldy are moving better fish, with Mini Dungeons, Dungeon Yellow, Woolly Buggers, Sparring Partners, Barely Legals, Mini Silk Kitties, Mini Whiteys, and sculpin patterns all in the rotation.
Lower Madison
The Lower keeps producing on a simple summer formula: cover water, fish the buckets, do not overthink it. PMDs, Yellow Sallies, and a few caddis are keeping enough fish looking up to justify a dry in play all day. The most consistent rig has been a #10-12 Chubby Chernobyl (or Hi-Viz Micro Chubby) towing a flashy #16 Lite Brite Perdigon, tan or rainbow Spanish Bullet, JuJu Baetis #18, or a wine BH San Juan Worm through the deeper buckets and riffles. Evening anglers are still finding risers in surprisingly skinny water during the last two hours of light.
Fish the Lower early. The gauge below Ennis Lake read 65°F at one o'clock today, and with upper-80s afternoons coming, the discharge off Ennis Lake will push that number up fast. Be on the water at first light, land fish quickly, and give the Lower the afternoon off; the cooler Upper is the better second half of the day.
Best techniques (Lower):
- Dry-dropper: the chubby-and-flash rig above; Zonker natural #6 or an Olive and Orange Zirdle when you want to go below the surface story.
- Dries and surface eaters: PMD Comparadun, Iceberg Caddis UV tan #16, Yellow Sally Bullet; a PMD Jigster behind the dry when they will not commit up top.
- Crayfish and streamers through the buckets: Dead Drift Crayfish, Tan Clouser, Zonker.
Hatches
Caddis lead the Upper with PMDs, Yellow Sallies, and occasional Green Drakes through the day; salmonflies essentially finished, Golden Stones still drawing eats on top. On the Lower, PMDs, sallies, and caddis keep the surface game honest while the bigger hatches taper.

Outlook. This is the week the Madison rewards a normal alarm clock less and less. Today's leftover clouds could produce one more good mayfly window, then the heat builds through Friday, so shift the day earlier and let the evening caddis hour close it out. The Upper is the anchor: consistent flows under a refilled Hebgen, clear water, and fish spread top to bottom. Treat the Lower as a first-light fishery and watch that Ennis Lake discharge temperature. For the day's real-time bug line before committing to a stretch, the Ennis and Bozeman shop crews are on the water daily and glad to point; whatever they just restocked is worth buying a few of.
