Madison River Fishing Report, July 3, 2026
2026-07-03 (July 3, 2026)
Summary
The holiday weekend setup is strong. The cold, showery stretch is winding down, Hebgen Lake is essentially refilled (consistent, healthy Upper flows for the foreseeable future), and the salmonfly hatch has pushed all the way up to Three Dollar Bridge with golden stones right behind.
At a glance: Upper at Kirby ~942 CFS, 59°F | below Ennis Lake ~1,240 CFS, ~66°F | Hebgen Dam 699 CFS, Varney 1,140 CFS (June 26 readings) | clarity great top to bottom | Best window: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., plus an evening dry-fly window | ~50% shower chance through the weekend, then typical summer weather
Upper Madison
The big bugs are the story. The salmonfly hatch moved upriver in a hurry: on June 26 the bulk of it sat between Pine Butte and Windy Point, and by July 1 it was working through the wade section and reaching Three Dollar Bridge, so the top of the river is the place to look this weekend. The hatch has run fractured and lighter than usual this year, but keep throwing the big bug in the right spots and you will get shots at some dandies. Golden Stones are hatching alongside the salmonflies (a fan favorite among the trout); fish the same big dry patterns in the green and gold colorway and size down if fish refuse. Beyond the stoneflies, PMDs, Yellow Sallies, Epeorus, Flavs, tons of caddis, and a few Green Drakes are hatching on most sections, and the cool week stretched the hatch out rather than killing it.
Fins & Feathers (today) calls the Upper one of the better places to spend a day right now. Dry-dropper has been the most productive rig: a Water Walker, Rogue Stone, or Pteronarcys Chubby with a Pat's Rubber Legs, Spanish Bullet, or flashy black perdigon a couple of feet below. Fish hold along the banks early, then slide into the riffles and faster water later in the day. Straight nymphing keeps producing on cooler mornings, and Slide Inn notes fish are getting picky in the middle and lower stretches, so keep changing bugs until you find the combination.
Best techniques (Upper):
- Dry fly: Big salmonfly and golden dries: Henry's Fork Salmonfly, Fool's Gold Salmonfly, Water Walker, Fluttering Stone, Salmonfly Supafly Stone, Rogue Stone, and the Pteronarcys Chubby tight to grassy banks; run the same patterns in green and gold for the goldens.
- Nymphing: Pat's Rubber Legs (#4-#8, black and coffee), Jig Prince, Frenchie Jig, Gold Lightning Bug, Spanish Bullet, Purple Blowtorch, Olsen's Hare's Ear Blowtorch, Three Dollar Dip, and worm patterns under the dry or on a tightline.
- Emergers (when bugs start to pop): Zylon Emerger and RIO Edible Emerger for caddis, Elden's CDC PMD Emerger for PMDs.
- Streamers (mornings and evenings): Smaller baitfish patterns: Barely Legals, Mini Silk Kitties, Mini Whiteys, and sculpin patterns; also two-toned olive/white and yellow bugs like Galloup's Laser Legal, Mini Boogieman, Mini Dolly Llama, a white and gold Goldy, and a White Peanut Envy. Cloud cover in the forecast favors the sinking line.
Lower Madison
The Lower continues to fish well and remains one of the better options around Bozeman. The bigger hatch activity has tapered, but PMDs, Yellow Sallies, and a few caddis keep fish looking up, and there are enough surface feeders to keep a dry in play all day. A dry-dropper rig is the most consistent way to cover water: a size 10 to 12 Chubby Chernobyl (or a Hi-Vis Micro Chubby) up front with a flashy size 16 Lite Brite Perdigon or tan Spanish Bullet through the deeper buckets and riffles. The River's Edge has it fishing best from early morning until 2 or 3 in the afternoon, picking back up in the evening, with the deeper buckets most productive during the day and evening dries working in fairly skinny water. Cover water, fish the buckets, and don't overthink it.
Fish the Lower early. The latest USGS reading below Ennis Lake is about 66°F, and the Lower warms fast once Ennis Lake discharge heats up; fish go inactive near 70°F. Start at first light, handle fish quickly, and lean on the cooler Upper (59°F) if afternoon temperatures climb.
Best techniques (Lower):
- Dry-dropper: Chubby Chernobyl (Pteronarcys) or Hi-Vis Micro Chubby over a Lite Brite Perdigon, tan or rainbow Spanish Bullet, JuJu Baetis (#18), or a wine BH San Juan Worm.
- Dries (day and evening): PMD Comparadun, Iceberg Caddis (UV tan #16), and Yellow Sally Bullet fished to surface feeders; PMD Jigster below when they will not commit on top.
- Streamers / crayfish: Zonker (natural #6), Olive and Orange Zirdle, Dead Drift Crayfish, and a Tan Clouser through the buckets.
Hatches
Salmonflies are the Upper headline, now through the wade section and up to Three Dollar Bridge, with Golden Stones hatching alongside as the summer big bug. PMDs, Yellow Sallies, Epeorus, Flavs, and heavy caddis are going on most sections, with a few Green Drakes mixed in. On the Lower, the bigger hatches have tapered but PMDs, Yellow Sallies, and caddis keep fish on the surface.

Outlook. Go this weekend, and go up top. The salmonfly and golden stone window at Three Dollar Bridge and the upper wade water is the reason to make the drive, and a refilled Hebgen means the flows under it will stay consistent. Showers hang around at about a 50% chance through the weekend before Saturday opens into typical summer weather; the cloud cover should keep the caddis and PMDs popping and the streamer bite alive. Slide Inn expects a small bump in flows from the incoming precipitation, which never hurts the streamer fishing. Fish the Lower early before it pushes toward 70°F, and call a shop in Ennis for the current big-bug line before committing to a stretch.
