Bitterroot River Fishing Report, June 9, 2026

All four rivers are dropping out of last week's rain-driven blowout and the trend is positive everywhere. Rock Creek is the headline: salmonflies are on the water and Grizzly Hackle rates it 5/5. The Bitterroot is the best big-river option with salmonflies starting on the upper river and both forks. The Blackfoot is shaping up ahead of its famous hatch, and the Clark Fork remains the slowest to clear. Lightweight's best fishing window for the week is 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Warning: Log jams and downed trees are a major hazard this year, and debris shifts with the dropping water. A few places are dangerous. Floaters need to stay alert and float cautiously.

The Bitterroot has fished well this week for those braving the flows. Clarity is great, the fish are hungry, and the river is the best overall option in the region. The Salmonfly hatch is underway on the upper river and both forks, with the main stem expecting golden stones in decent numbers soon. The West Fork (~520 CFS near Conner) is the cleanest small-water option in the system. Fish soft inside bends, side channels, bank seams, and pools, and leave the fast water alone.

Best techniques

• The good ol' worm has been most effective: Worminator, Squirm, and Jig SJ, with Wire Worms in the mix. Big stonefly nymphs are a strong second: TB Pat's, DB Stones, TJ Hookers, Jigglers, and Front St. Stones. Nymph heavy and deep.
• If you find a hatch, nymph a caddis or mayfly pattern: Jig PT, TNT PMD, Blowtorch, Duracell, Shuck It, Hare's Ear, Frenchie, or Split Case PMD.
• Streamer fishing can be great right now, and you can get away with a big fly: Articulated Sparkle Yummies, Bangtails, and Shake and Bakes are Grizzly Hackle favorites; Blackfoot River Outfitters likes an Olive or Yellow Dungeon and a Kreelex; also rotate Sparkle Minnows, Sculpzillas, Mini Dungeons, Buggers, Peanut Envy style flies, and a Thin Mint.
• Dry-dropper is increasingly realistic: Chubby Chernobyl or Water Walker over a nymph. Dries for the afternoon window: salmonfly and golden stone patterns (#4-8), Green Drake patterns (#10-12), PMDs (#14-18), tan caddis (#14-16), Corn Fed Caddis, and Elk Hair Caddis. Blackfoot River Outfitters' featured dries add Jake's Hi-Vis CDC Caddis, MFC Royal Wulff, Plan B (Black/UV Black and Black/Purple), Carlson's Purple Haze, and the MFC Hot Spot Para-Wulff Brindle.

Hatches

Salmonflies on the upper river and forks with Golden Stones increasingly active behind them; expect fish keyed on stoneflies for the next couple of weeks. Green Drakes, PMDs, caddis, and BWOs are showing, especially on cloudy afternoons.

Outlook. If flows keep dropping as forecast, the next two weeks could be some of the best fishing of early summer. Goldens (often overlooked while everyone chases salmonflies) can make for excellent dry fly fishing. Cool and rainy through the week, which helps keep runoff pressure down.
