6/26/2026: Bitterroot River Fishing Report
2026-06-26 (June 26, 2026)
Regional summary
Western Montana has settled into a strong early-summer window. Runoff is receding across the region, flows are dropping into workable summer shape, and the salmonfly show is winding down (a few stragglers linger in the upper Blackfoot canyon and high in the Rock Creek drainage). Golden Stones are now the headline big bug, with PMDs, Green Drakes, Yellow Sallies, and caddis all in the mix. Dry-dropper is the dominant method everywhere. Watch the forecast: afternoon highs push near 90°F midweek before cooler weather and thunderstorms arrive Friday and Saturday. Fish early; carry a thermometer.
At a glance: Solid summer shape, "bug soup" | good clarity | ~50°F upper to upper-50s lower | ~1,240 CFS Darby, ~2,810 Bell Crossing, ~3,900 near Missoula | GH rating: 4.5/5 | Best window: 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Float hazard. Log jams and debris remain a major hazard, especially with the water dropping fast and exposing new wood. Floaters need to stay alert and float cautiously.
The Bitterroot is in solid summer shape and fishing great, with so many overlapping hatches the shops are calling it "bug soup." The lower river still carries enough water to keep fish comfortable while the upper and middle river are increasingly manageable for wade and float anglers alike. Trout are spreading into classic summer water: riffle edges, tailouts, foam lines, soft bank seams, and side channels. Cooler, wetter weather this weekend could bump flows or add a little color.
Best techniques
- Dry-dropper is the best approach: a Chubby Chernobyl, Plan B, or Golden Juicy Stone up top trailing a Frenchie, Copper Top Duracell, Jig TNT PMD, or TJ Hooker.
- Hit the banks and woody structure for fish on the big golden stones; watch foam lines and slower water for PMDs.
- Streamers are a great option: strip something flashy like a Kreelex, Sparkle Minnow, or Goldie.
Hatches
Consistent Golden Stones (the local "Bitterroot stones"), PMDs, Yellow Sallies, Green Drakes, and caddis, plus a few lingering salmonflies. Dry-fly fishing has been consistent throughout the day.
