Bitterroot River Fishing Report: June 11, 2026

Log jams and downed trees are a major hazard this year, and debris shifts as the water drops. A few places are dangerous. Floaters need to stay alert and float cautiously.

At a glance: Elevated but the best overall option in the region, dropping steadily | Clarity much improved (you can see river rocks again) | Water temp 48-57°F | ~1,650-2,180 CFS at Darby, ~4,720 at Bell Crossing, ~4,860-6,690 near Missoula | Grizzly Hackle: 3/5 | Missoulian Angler: 3/5 | Best window: afternoons, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Bitterroot continues to improve daily and has fished well all week for those braving the flows. Clarity is great, the fish are hungry, and both Lightweight and Freestone call it the best system in the region right now. The Salmonfly hatch is underway on the upper river and both forks, with Golden Stones increasingly active behind it; the main stem should see goldens in decent numbers soon. The West Fork (~520 CFS near Conner) is the cleanest small-water option in the system. Fish soft inside bends, side channels, bank seams, and pools, and leave the fast water for the floaters.

Best techniques

  • The good ol' worm has proven most effective: Worminator, Squirm, and Jig SJ, with Wire Worms in the mix during higher flows. Big stonefly nymphs are a strong second: TB Pat's, DB Stones, TJ Hookers, Jigglers, and Front St. Stones. Nymph heavy and deep.
  • If you find a hatch, nymph a caddis or mayfly pattern: Jig PT, TNT PMD, Blowtorch, Duracell, Shuck It, Hare's Ear, Frenchie, or Split Case PMD.
  • Streamer fishing can be great right now, and you can get away with a big fly: Articulated Sparkle Yummies, Bangtails, and Shake and Bakes are Grizzly Hackle favorites; Blackfoot River Outfitters likes an Olive or Yellow Dungeon and a Kreelex; also rotate Sparkle Minnows, Sculpzillas, Mini Dungeons, Peanut Envy style flies, and a Thin Mint.
  • Don't overlook the dry-dropper game on the upper river and forks; some of the best fish of the season are already looking up. A Chubby Chernobyl or Water Walker over a nymph works. Dries for the afternoon window: salmonfly patterns (#4-6), golden stone patterns (#6-8), Green Drake patterns (#10-12), PMDs (#14-18), tan caddis (#14-16), Corn Fed Caddis, Elk Hair Caddis, and Parachutes. Blackfoot River Outfitters' featured dries add Jake's Hi-Vis CDC Caddis, MFC Royal Wulff, Plan B (Black/UV Black and Black/Purple), Carlson's Purple Haze, and the MFC Hot Spot Para-Wulff Brindle.

Hatches and flies. Salmonflies on the upper river and forks; expect fish keyed heavily on stoneflies for the next couple of weeks as the hatch progresses upstream. Green Drakes, PMDs, caddis, and BWOs are also showing, especially on cloudy afternoons.

Outlook. If flows continue to drop as forecast, the next two weeks could provide some of the best fishing of the early summer season. Goldens (often overlooked while everyone chases salmonfly madness) can make for excellent dry fly fishing. Cool, wet weather through the week helps keep runoff pressure down.
