Rock Creek Fishing Report, May 23, 2026
Western Montana is on the back side of a big runoff push. All four rivers crested last week and are dropping fast — clarity is improving daily, but flows are still high and off-color. This is a subsurface week: heavy nymph rigs and streamers worked tight to soft edges, side channels, and inside seams are the consistent producers, with a developing caddis and BWO dry game in the evenings. The story everyone is watching is the Salmonfly hatch — the first nymphs are showing on Rock Creek and the Blackfoot, and a warm weekend could trigger the first adults. Best fishing window this week is roughly 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Warning: Hazards this week
- Bitterroot: Log jams and debris throughout the system, with debris specifically reported at the Main Street Diversion and an obstruction near Poker Joe. Float cautiously.
- Rock Creek: Tree down at Mile Marker 27, plus a new sweeper between Upper Fire Ring and the Microburst. High flows make wading dangerous — spot-check anything questionable before committing to a float.
- All rivers: High, pushy water. Wade conservatively; a wading staff and studded boots are well worth it this week.

Rock Creek is running swiftly but is dropping gradually and clarity has improved dramatically — it's just starting to get good. It's still runoff season, though; don't expect July flows. The cold snap postponed the big bugs, but a few salmonfly nymphs are showing on the lower end, a sign the hatch could pop any day with the forecasted heat. The upper sections are fishing better and clearer.
Best techniques:
- Nymph heavy and short in deeper runs and pocket water. Run a big stonefly nymph — Pat's Rubber Legs, Double Bead Stone, Zirdle Bug, or TJ Hooker — with a worm (San Juan Worm, Wire Worm, Squirmy Worm) or a small Prince Nymph / Frenchie dropper.
- Heavy dry-dropper: a foam attractor like a Chubby Chernobyl up top with a weighted jig nymph below to pick apart shoreline pockets.
- Don't sleep on streamers — Sparkle Minnows, a Woolly Bugger, Bighorn Bugger, or a Mini-Dungeon worked slow and tight to undercut banks and root wads.
Hatches
The Mother's Day caddis (an Olive Elk Hair Caddis or Corn Fed Caddis) is the main event in shaded, slower tailouts, with BWOs, March Browns, and the occasional drake in the evenings. Good dries for rising fish: X-Caddis, Parachutes, Carlson's Purple Haze, Last Chance Cripple, Tilt Wing BWO, Hot Spot Para-Wulff, Flash Cripple, Jake's Green Drake, and Stranahan's Brindle Chute.

Outlook: Gorgeous canyon weather with clear skies and highs in the high 60s through the weekend, then rain Monday and cooler temps for the week. As the creek drops the upper end will clear first — and the salmonflies are coming.
