Regional summary
August has settled over the four rivers with the particular hush of low water. Gauges are down across the board, hoot owl restrictions (no fishing from 2:00 p.m. to midnight) now cover every named stretch from the Blackfoot to Upper Rock Creek, and fish are holding wherever they can find oxygen. The pattern repeats on all four rivers this week: fish early, carry a thermometer, and treat the 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. window (the read from Lightweight Fly Shop in Stevensville) as the day's real opportunity.

Rock Creek is having the best week of the four, at least by Grizzly Hackle's numbers: a 4 out of 5 rating while its neighbors sit lower. The Clinton gauge reads around 342 to 348 cfs, low enough that wading is easy and fish are concentrated, but also low enough that they spook easily. No floating is allowed on Rock Creek between July 1 and November 30, and the upper reach, from the West and Middle fork confluence to the mouth of Stoney Creek, now carries hoot owl restrictions as well.
Best techniques
- Work the pocket water, boulder seams, and shaded slots quietly and from a distance before wading in
- A Chubby Chernobyl or Water Walker up top with a Duracell or Jigged Hare's Ear underneath covers most water
- Switch to a dedicated spruce moth dry (Billy's Butterfly) or a small attractor once that hatch gets going mid-morning
Hatches
Spruce moths are starting to draw fish consistently, joining the tail end of PMD and caddis activity and a reliable evening spinner fall. This is prime early season spruce moth water, and it should only improve.
