Madison River Fishing Report: May 14, 2026

Summary

The Madison is clear and fishable on a spring-flow regime, with Hebgen holding steady and tributary creeks driving most of the variation. Nymphing is the workhorse on both the upper wade and float stretches, a midge drift up high and stonefly nymphs and worms trailing BWO and caddis nymphs in the float. Early caddis on the lower reaches has Slide Inn flagging a possible strong Mother's Day window.

At a glance: Hebgen 665 cfs (Slide Inn 4/20) | Kirby 788 cfs | Varney 960 cfs | Upper Madison clear, fishable, spring-flow regime | Float stretch (Lyons to Ennis) same flow profile, water temps cool but climbing | Ennis Lake ice-free

Upper Madison (wade, above the lakes): clear, fishable, spring-flow regime. Hebgen 665 cfs, Kirby 788 cfs, Varney 960 cfs (per Slide Inn 4/20). Hebgen Dam is holding steady; Slide Inn doesn't expect a meaningful bump until mid to late June barring biblical precip, so tributary creek flows drive most of the variation through spring.

Float stretch (Lyons to Ennis): same dam-controlled flow profile; water temps still cool but climbing. Caddis are showing on the lower reaches between Varney and Ennis Lake earlier than typical, Slide Inn notes a strong Mother's Day caddis window is possible this year. Ennis Lake is fully ice-free.

Lower Madison (below Ennis Lake): not covered in either current shop report; no data.

Spawning note: Active spawning redds throughout the system. Both shops flag cleared gravel beds river-wide, wade carefully, and if you cross a redd, walk in front of it rather than behind. Most eggs sit 3 to 10 ft downstream of the visible spawning bed.

Best techniques

  • Nymphing is the workhorse on both stretches. Double-nymph rig under an indicator, deeper runs and slower seams, shelfy pockets where the bottom drops. Fish are sitting in the slow water.
  • Upper wade (above the lakes) is mostly a midge drift, small midge larva/pupa patterns producing numbers. BWOs are finally showing up around Raynolds and Three Dollar; cover small Baetis nymphs and dries when you see the sailboats.
  • Float stretch runs stonefly nymphs and worms trailing BWO and caddis nymphs. Bite ramps up around 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., no rush to be on the water at first light.
  • Dries are a cloudy-afternoon proposition right now: midges on the wade stretch, BWOs where they're hatching. Parachute Adams and BWO-specific dries cover most of it.
  • Streamers have been hit-or-miss. The play has been small streamers nymphed dead-drift on the float stretch ("right in their face"); for stripped streamer work, walk-and-wade Ennis Bridge to Lake or Quake Lake to Lyons has been more productive than the float boat. Stripped fishing should improve as water temps push into the high 40s and low 50s.

Hatches and flies.

Upper Madison, wade stretch: active hatches are midges all day, BWOs (Baetis) starting up around Raynolds and Three Dollar.

Upper Madison, float stretch: active hatches are BWOs, early caddis on the lower float reaches (between Varney and Ennis Lake, Slide Inn flagging this as unusual and a strong Mother's Day caddis window if it holds), midges.

Outlook. Hebgen Dam flows are expected to hold low through mid to late June, so fishable conditions should be stable on the Upper as long as the tributary creeks don't blow out. Watch water temps, once they hit the high 40s and low 50s the streamer chase rate should improve materially. Caddis on the lower float reaches are early; the Mother's Day window (May 10 weekend area) may already be in play. Spawning redds remain the main wading hazard.
