Blackfoot River Fishing Report: May 23, 2026
Western Montana is on the back side of a big runoff push. All four rivers crested last week and are dropping fast — clarity is improving daily, but flows are still high and off-color. This is a subsurface week: heavy nymph rigs and streamers worked tight to soft edges, side channels, and inside seams are the consistent producers, with a developing caddis and BWO dry game in the evenings. The story everyone is watching is the Salmonfly hatch — the first nymphs are showing on Rock Creek and the Blackfoot, and a warm weekend could trigger the first adults. Best fishing window this week is roughly 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Warning: Hazards this week
- Bitterroot: Log jams and debris throughout the system, with debris specifically reported at the Main Street Diversion and an obstruction near Poker Joe. Float cautiously.
- Rock Creek: Tree down at Mile Marker 27, plus a new sweeper between Upper Fire Ring and the Microburst. High flows make wading dangerous — spot-check anything questionable before committing to a float.
- All rivers: High, pushy water. Wade conservatively; a wading staff and studded boots are well worth it this week.
At a glance: High and dropping (~3,450 cfs, off a 7,000 peak), off-color but clearing · 47–52°F · Grizzly Hackle: 2.5/5 · Best window: 11 a.m.–3 p.m.
The Blackfoot is dropping rapidly off Friday's peak and giving off that classic "Blackfoot green." Clarity is improving daily, though the recent cold snap pulled water temps back down from near-salmonfly range. The upper river is clearing faster than the lower end, and the tributaries up Highway 200 are open as a backup. Wade fishing is tough at these flows — look for soft pockets tight to the banks and eddies.
Best techniques:
- Nymphing is the bread and butter. Run heavy rigs to get down in fast current: a big stonefly nymph — Pat's Rubber Legs, TJ Hooker, Dbl Bead Stone, or a Jiggler — trailed by a worm such as a San Juan Worm, Wire Worm, or Squirmy Worm. Add a Prince Nymph, Frenchie, or Pheasant Tail Nymph as a smaller dropper.
- Dry-dropper with a Chubby Chernobyl on top is the right setup as salmonflies approach.
- Streamers are pulling aggressive fish — Sparkle Minnows, Kreelex, and Woolly Buggers fished slow and deep along structure. Lighter white and gold patterns will turn on as clarity improves.
Hatches & dries: Caddis are just beginning in the evenings, with March Browns and BWOs on warmer afternoons. Be on the lookout for the first salmonflies over the warm weekend. Top dries: Elk Hair Caddis, Furminksy's Fluttering Foam Caddis, Goddard Caddis, Carlson's Purple Haze, Hot Spot Para-Wulff, and Stranahan's Brindle Chute.
Outlook: Bluebird and warm through the weekend (highs in the high 60s to low 70s), with rain returning Monday. Flows dropping and clarity improving daily — the system is shaping up for a strong late-spring window, with the salmonfly hatch likely within a couple of weeks.
