Bitterroot River Fishing Report: May 23, 2026

Western Montana is on the back side of a big runoff push. All four rivers crested last week and are dropping fast — clarity is improving daily, but flows are still high and off-color. This is a subsurface week: heavy nymph rigs and streamers worked tight to soft edges, side channels, and inside seams are the consistent producers, with a developing caddis and BWO dry game in the evenings. The story everyone is watching is the Salmonfly hatch — the first nymphs are showing on Rock Creek and the Blackfoot, and a warm weekend could trigger the first adults. Best fishing window this week is roughly 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

Warning: Hazards this week

  • Bitterroot: Log jams and debris throughout the system, with debris specifically reported at the Main Street Diversion and an obstruction near Poker Joe. Float cautiously.
  • Rock Creek: Tree down at Mile Marker 27, plus a new sweeper between Upper Fire Ring and the Microburst. High flows make wading dangerous — spot-check anything questionable before committing to a float.
  • All rivers: High, pushy water. Wade conservatively; a wading staff and studded boots are well worth it this week.

At a glance: High and dropping fast (~4,150 cfs, off an 11,600 peak), shedding color · 45–54°F · Grizzly Hackle: 3/5 · Best window: 11 a.m.–3 p.m. · Best overall bet in the region this week

The Root peaked at 11,600 cfs on the 15th and has dropped hard with the cold weather — it's down to about 4,150 and shedding color, though some mud remains. It has backed off enough to be the best overall option in the region, with the most fishable side-channel water, soft edges, and protected holding zones. The upper river should clear in the next couple of days. Fish have been hungry and the river fished well this past week.

Best techniques:

  • Nymph heavy and deep through soft pockets on the bank. The worm has been most effective — a Worminator, Squirm, or Jig SJ — backed by a big stonefly nymph: Pat's Rubber Legs, TJ Hooker, DB Stone, Front St. Stone, or a Jiggler. Follow with a Jig PT, Blow Torch, Duracell, Frenchie, or Hare's Ear Nymph.
  • Streamers are very much in play — small-to-medium, flashy, and quick to sink: Sparkle Minnows, Goldie, Kreelex, Mini Dungeons, Masked Avengers, and Two Tones worked slowly through structure and deeper buckets.
  • Drop a dry under a Chubby Chernobyl when fish are looking up.

Hatches & dries: The evening dry-fly bite has been the highlight — BWOs, March Browns, and even a cheeky midge cluster. Caddis are building. Fish a Corn Fed, PMX, or Elk Hair Caddis, and drop a Last Chance Cripple, smaller Parachute Adams, or BWO emerger to rising fish. Other strong dries: Jake's Hi-Vis CDC Caddis, MFC Royal Wulff, Plan B, Carlson's Purple Haze, and Hot Spot Para-Wulff. Keep an eye out for drakes, salmon bugs, and golden stones — the next few hot days could bring the first orange bastards off.

Outlook: Bluebird and warm both weekend days (highs in the 70s). Rain returns Monday but stays warm, with temps starting to drop Tuesday. Watch flows and debris closely as the river continues to fall.
