Bitterroot River Fishing Report, April 27, 2026
Hazard — log jams and debris from early runoff are still a major issue. Kingfisher reports a posted warning at Poker Joe FAS noting a river blockage between Poker Joe and Florence FAS (46.593246, -114.058361): portage clear left. Grizzly Hackle reports lots of trees down — call the Missoula shop for current info. Freestone reports limited wade access in many sections. Float cautiously and scout from above when possible.

The Bitterroot has bumped into early-runoff territory but remains the best dry-fly window of the four rivers. March Browns are hatching thick midday with Skwalas still very much in the picture; Grey Drakes, BWOs, midges, and Nemoura also coming off. The dry fly varies by the day — look for warm, stable afternoons in the late-morning through mid-afternoon window. Cold mornings keep fish nymph-deep until temps lift.
Best techniques
- Subsurface morning into midday — heavy stonefly nymphs with smaller mayfly droppers, worms in stained water
- Dry-fly afternoons when the bugs lift off — the best fish hold tight to woody structure where nymph rigs can't reach
- Streamers consistently moving fish, especially during low light and as flows fluctuate
- Bobber rigs through inside seams and deeper holes when the dry-fly window closes
