Bitterroot River Fishing Report, April 24, 2026
Visibility 3–4 ft · Water temp 48°F · High, dropping · Quality 4/5
Warning: Floater hazard: log jams and downed trees are widespread from the early runoff. Posted blockage between Poker Joe FAS and Florence FAS — portage clear left. Scout from above and float cautiously.
The 'Root is firing on the most cylinders right now — highest quality rating of the three at 4/5. Flows at Darby are around 1,700 cfs and 3,150 at Bell Crossing, dropped and clearing with the recent cool stretch, water temp 48°F. The dry-fly window is open: thick March Brown hatches midday, Skwalas still very much in the picture, plus BWOs and Grey Drakes. Best fish are coming on dry-dropper rigs worked tight to woody structure where pure nymph rigs can't go. Mornings stay chilly — start subsurface, switch to dries when the bugs start moving.
Techniques
- Nymphing. Riffles, buckets and slow inside-bends, 4–6 ft deep. Pat's Rubber Legs, Front St. Stone, Double Bead Stone or TJ Hooker as the anchor; Jig PT, Jig Prince, Spanish Bullet, Blow Torch, or a Tungsten Fire Perdigon as the trailer.
- Dries. Skwala dries (Cadillac Skwala, Water Walker, Plan B, Rogue Stone, Clark Fork Stone, A.J.'s Rolling Stone) in #8–10. For the March Brown hatch run #14–16: Brindle Chute, Carnage Drake, Flash Cripple, Film Critic, Hot Spot Para-Wulff.
- Streamers. Big, deep, in the zone fast. Sparkle Minnow, Mini-Dungeon, Kreelex, Lil' Kim, Goldie, Barely Legal and Peanut Envy are the producers.
Hatches
Skwala, March Brown (heavy), BWO, Nemoura, Grey Drake, midge.

Outlook. Continues to drop through the weekend. Tue warm-up may bump flows; the Wed cold front could trim the dry-fly window briefly before things settle.
