Rock Creek Fishing Report, May 10, 2026
Snowmelt v3 has the entire Missoula-area system high and off-color. Nymphing and streamers are the play across all four rivers; dry fly action is limited but improving on the Bitterroot, where fish are starting to look up in the evenings. Stay safe wading or floating — log jams and tree hazards remain a real concern, especially on the Bitterroot.
Conditions at-a-glance: Flows near Clinton just above 1,000 cfs and dropping · Water condition: off-color tint, not blown out · Water temps low 40s · Visibility: marginal but workable.
The Creek is in a classic early-May groove — cold and pushy, but absolutely fishable for anyone willing to work for it. Pressure is up at the road-accessible spots; getting some distance pays off. Bug activity is building: BWOs showing consistently, March Browns coming on, and the first caddis of the year starting to flutter. Afternoon risers are worth chasing in the softer seams and tailouts.
Best techniques
- Nymphing is the bread and butter — heavier double-bead-stone rigs with smaller droppers (perdigon or worm) in deeper runs and pocket water.
- Dry-dropper through softer inside bends works once the afternoon hatch fires.
- Streamers tight to structure (undercut banks, root wads, dark slots); a little flash helps if the sun pops.
