Clark Fork River Fishing Report, May 31, 2026

Runoff is back across the region after another warm push. The Bitterroot is the most fishable mainstem; Salmonflies have arrived on lower Rock Creek but high, off-color water is throttling the dry-fly bite everywhere. Nymph heavy, fish the soft edges, and treat dries as opportunistic until flows drop.

Conditions: High and off-color · Above Missoula ~9,140 CFS · Below Missoula ~19,900 CFS · 50–58°F · Grizzly Hackle: 1/5 · Best window: 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The lower river is a serious-volume float scenario — not a casual wade-fishing option. The upper river above Missoula still has fishable edge water.

Another runoff bump has the Clark Fork pumping. The fish stack in slow inside bends and back-eddies; tight-to-bank streamer work and deep nymphing are the consistent calls. The upper river is meaningfully more fishable than the lower. Salmonflies and Golden Stones are about to break loose once flows ease.

Best techniques

  • Heavy nymph rigs — get flies down fast in turbid water
  • Streamers fished slow and deep along structure and undercut banks; lean on dark, high-contrast patterns; mix in white/gold in cleaner side channels
  • Limited dry windows on PMDs in softer back eddies during warm afternoons
