The most recent read, from The River's Edge in Bozeman on July 19, put the flow at 3,160 cfs at Ennis Lake and described flows being pushed up and down to manage water temperature in the wake of the season's hoot owl restrictions, tough fishing conditions by their own account. Fins & Feathers' Lower Madison report is older still (June 26) and describes an easier, more settled pattern (a Chubby Chernobyl over a Lite Brite Perdigon or tan Spanish Bullet) that predates the current heat. Treat both as background rather than today's word on the water; a call to either Bozeman shop is the better read on the Lower right now.
Hatches
Stonefly season is winding down to the last nocturnal shucks along the banks, and the hopper hatch is building toward what both fresh sources call imminent. Daily caddis are still showing late afternoon and evening, though thinning.
