Rock Creek Fishing Report: May 16, 2026

Runoff is in full swing across western Montana, with a cold, wet weekend pushing flows higher and snow showers in the forecast through Sunday before things dry out and warm into the 60s by midweek. Reminder: tributaries open today, 5/16. The Bitterroot is currently the most fishable of the four — better edge structure and side channels — but it is still big, off-color, and demands disciplined water selection.

At-a-glance: High and off-color · 47–49°F · ~1,840 CFS at Clinton (well above wade-comfortable) · Grizzly Hackle: 1/5 · Best window: 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Conditions

Rock Creek is up to roughly 1,800–2,000 CFS — blown out for comfortable wade fishing. The Creek is fishable but dangerous in spots; fish are moving to slower side channels and inside bends to get out of the main push. Blackfoot River Outfitters and Grizzly Hackle agree clarity is decent and improving as water drops, but the main stem is too big and fast right now. Focus on small side channels, boulder refuges, and back-eddies.

Best Techniques

  • Heavy nymph rigs with split shot to punch down through pushy water.
  • Morning over evening if you have the choice — flows tend to swell late.
  • Streamers fished slow and tight to undercut banks, root wads, and dark deeper slots.
  • Dries only when fish are clearly rising in protected water.

Hatches & Fly Recommendations

Outlook

Cool and wet weekend with highs in the 40s and snow showers Saturday and Sunday in the canyon; clearing Monday with temps climbing back toward 60 by Thursday. Big bugs are on the horizon — get the salmonfly box ready.
