Bitterroot River Fishing Report, May 16, 2026
Runoff is in full swing across western Montana, with a cold, wet weekend pushing flows higher and snow showers in the forecast through Sunday before things dry out and warm into the 60s by midweek. Reminder: tributaries open today, 5/16. The Bitterroot is currently the most fishable of the four — better edge structure and side channels — but it is still big, off-color, and demands disciplined water selection.
Warning: Floaters beware. Log jams and downed trees are a major hazard from early runoff. Woodside Bridge FAS is partially closed — no vehicle access due to flooding; walk-in only, with caution. Watch for the obstruction near Poker Joe. Use real judgment on the main stem.

Conditions
The Bitterroot is the most fishable of the four — more side channels, soft banks, and inside seams — but it's still big and moving. Mainstem near Missoula is muddy (~9,400 CFS per Kingfisher); upper river around Hamilton and Darby holds the cleaner water. Blackfoot River Outfitters has water temp at 53°F mid-day. Warm weather earlier in the week pushed runoff hard.
Best Techniques
- Nymphing slower seams, inside bends, and softer bank water is the most reliable approach.
- A dry-dropper is the most versatile rig; the best fish are coming from tight against woody structure where nymphs don't drift.
- Streamers are moving fish in the off-color water — bigger, darker, high-contrast patterns fished slow.
- Only fish dries when you actually see risers in soft water; evenings are the highlight window.

Rainy and cool weekend with highs in the upper 40s Saturday and Sunday, then drying and warming through the 60s Monday into Thursday. Late May and June should bring golden stones into the mix and the dry-fly game ramping back up. First salmonflies of the season expected on the Root soon.
